Guest Speaker: Paul Mohapel - The Benefits of Mindfulness
Paul is an educator, teaching in the leadership and continuing studies programs at Royal Roads University (2015 Kelly Outstanding Facilitator award), as well as a faculty member for the Canadian Medical Association’s (CMA) management training program. He teaches in a mindfulness certificate program at Royal Roads University. He has a doctorate in psychology/neuroscience and a Master’s degree in leadership and training. He has consulted and facilitated leadership events for a large array of national clients around the topics of mindfulness, leadership, and organizational effectiveness. He is an active leadership researcher and has published over 30 academic articles in neuroscience and leadership.
Over the past few years there has been a great deal of scientific research on how mindfulness meditation techniques can help people deal better with stress, focus, and connect more meaningfully to others. With an aim to foster resilience and stress tolerance, both in children and their parents, this session will share practices that enrich the parent-child relationship. This session will emphasize strategies for developing greater attunement between parent and child through pragmatic practices and approaches grounded in mindful parenting concepts. Topics covered include:
• Overview the research demonstrating the benefits of mindfulness on one’s wellbeing, including: stress management, compassion and social skills, enhanced focus and learning.
• Explore how mindfulness can help children overcoming specific challenges like insomnia, overeating, ADHD, hyper-perfectionism, and anxiety.
• Introduce age-appropriate mindful practices that parents can do with children that are fun and motivating.
The first half of the evening will be dedicated to the above topic and the second half of the meeting will be open for discussions.
As it is really helpful for us to have an idea of who is able to attend, we would really appreciate people RSVPing to Jocelyn(email:Jocelyn.CarterSim@viha.ca) by Tuesday morning the day of the meeting. We understand that life happens and we won't hold you to coming but we like to have a sense for food and drinks as to who will likely be attending. Thank you in advance. :) This has been helpful in the past so really appreciate all those who respond.
Light refreshments will be provided at the meeting.
Our next meeting is scheduled for May 8, 2018.
New parents are always welcome. Drop-ins are welcome.
